We are so excited to welcome Carissa Hodgson to share from a parent's perspective what parents with cancer need from us as health care professionals when supporting their children. Carissa Hodgson, LCSW, OSW-C is the Director of Programs and Community Outreach at Bright Spot Network, which provides support to parents with cancer who have young children. She has over 15 years of clinical and program experience working with families facing cancer. She has been co-chair of the Youth, Families and Cancer Special Interest Group at the Association of Oncology Social Work since 2015. Carissa is a Lecturer at the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she teaches courses on grief & loss and generalist practice with individuals, families and groups. She has a private psychotherapy and consultation practice where she specializes in cancer, chronic illness, caregiving, grief and loss, child & adolescent development, family systems, and the queer community.

Webinar Description: When parents hear the words, “You have cancer,” their first thought is often: How are my kids going to handle this? They may worry more about their kids than themselves, wondering how to talk with their children about cancer, how to help their kids cope with big feelings, and how to manage changes in routine. While children benefit from 1-1 support from a variety of professionals, we know that the best way to support kids through a challenging life event is to empower parents with the skills and tools they need to connect with and support their children. How exactly can CCLS and other healthcare professionals meet this need? What information, education, coaching, and resources can parents take home to use with their children? How can CCLS and other professionals work together to create a village of support for families facing cancer? *This webinar will be recorded. You must be registered to receive recording link and post-quiz.
